An Abridged History of Zulu Boats in Scotland

Further to the successful premiere of Zulu by Esther Swift in the Museum’s Zulu Gallery as part of the East Neuk Festival last month, it is fitting that, in this blog post, student Mimi Cottingham has chosen to reflect on the history and origins of these imposing vessels.

Mimi says:

I’m a student at the University of St Andrews pursuing a graduate degree in Museum and Heritage Studies, and I’ve been working at the Scottish Fisheries Museum as a Photography Archives Assistant for the summer. During my time in this role, I’ve predominantly worked on tagging and captioning photos part of the online photography collection which is how I came across the story of Zulu boats in Scotland. The foreign name assigned to this class of boats sparked my interest in the subject and led to the creation of this post.
