Designer's model of fisheries research vessel Scotia

Technology has made fishing boats more efficient so that fewer men and boats can catch many more fish. Navigation and fish-finding are key areas which have benefited from electronic advances. For over a century scientists have studied the seas to gauge the effects of these developments on marine life. Over the same period, regulation has increased, playing an ever more dominant role in controlling catches.

This gallery examines the importance, and consequences, of new technology, fisheries research and regulation to the industry, the environment and the fishing communities of Scotland. It includes aspects of the Buckland Collection of Victorian fish casts created by the first ever Inspector of Fisheries Frank Buckland.
